In 2007, The National Fisheries Institute (NFI) sponsored the formation of the Better Seafood Board (BSB) to support and provide accountability for the members’ commitment to economic integrity. Members of NFI are also members of the BSB, which is an independent organization led by a 15-person Board of Managers. The Board of Managers provides operational oversight and guidance for the BSB.

The BSB does not shy away from seafood fraud but rather has effectively and successfully changed the climate and the focus with respect to trade, policy and enforcement by pulling seafood fraud out of the shadows. BSB supports enforcement of existing laws and regulations that prohibit seafood fraud.

The members of the NFI recognize that being honest with their customers is the only way to promote and maintain confidence in the seafood products that they provide. NFI CEOs have pledged to conduct themselves and their business practices in an honest and trustworthy manner and to adhere to the industry principles of economic integrity, which include:

• Our products are correctly labeled for weight and counts.

• Our products are correctly labeled for identity and that species are not knowingly substituted in any manner.

• Our products are correctly labeled for the country of origin.

• Our products are correctly labeled for added ingredients.

• Our product labeling is truthful and not misleading.

The BSB works with aligned groups in the seafood value chain to ensure that buyers recognize that NFI members are seafood providers that have taken extra steps to ensure that their products are properly labeled for weights and counts, country of origin, and species.
